Airline execs reveal IT investments through 2016 [INFOGRAPHIC]

Posted by on in Industry News

The 2013 Airline IT Trends survey was released today by SITA, a co-operative run by major world airlines to provide data-processing services.

The survey received responses from 200 senior IT executives from airlines representing half of global passenger traffic.

All of these executives said they planned to invest in business intelligence (BI) solutions in the next three years, up from 80% who said they would in last year’s survey.

Here are other key statistics on airline IT trends:

Nearly 75% of airline information technology (IT) executives say investing in business intelligence (BI) solutions for sales and marketing is their top priority.

Four Big Picture questions around airline IT and distribution

Posted by on in Industry News

As in previous years there is a fair amount of a buzz at the SITA IT Summit around some new products and services for the airline and airport world.

But, often at these events it is about internal IT rather than external technology.

As a precursor to this year’s event, I am taking a look at some of the underlying questions that perhaps are not being answered – such as, is change coming to airline distribution?

I believe that despite the best efforts of GDSs and travel agents to retain the status quo, reformation – if not a slow revolution – is coming and it’s not pretty.

IATA‘s NDC (New Distribution Capability) has become a touchstone for the reform of airline passenger distribution change.

In my view, as a long time participant in distribution, I ask myself whether the proposed reforms are, frankly, enough to bring the industry to even the current state of the art required.

An airline merchandising perspective – what customers want and what they say they want

Posted by on in Industry News

There has been much rhetoric recently about how to offer ancillary services to consumers, what services to offer and when, that it raises the question whether consumers want all these additional/complementary elements.

Many travellers will tell you they just want a comfortable seat at a reasonable price and to arrive on time.

Simple, right?

Tnooz put these questions (and some others) to SAS vice president of global digital sales, Christina Ericsson, for an airline perspective.

Google pushes review-influenced recommendations above local organic search results in US

Posted by on in Industry News

After brief experiments, Google officially launched an interactive “carousel” of recommendations above organic results when users run searches for local venues.

Local venues with high ratings via Zagat and other sources are more likely to feature in the top of results now. They appear above organic search results, which were more easily influenced by search engine optimization (SEO).

The Google Knowledge Graph results appear in most desktop browsers in the US and on some tablet browsers. The search results work for queries like “hotels in Denver”, “things to do in (city name)”, and “san francisco cafes”.

For example, type “hotels” and the name of a city you’re interested in (such as “Dallas hotels”) and you’ll see suggested results as determined by Google’s formula.

Behold, a search for Mexican restaurants in New York City:

Transport marketplace Pombai goes to the great incubator in the sky

Posted by on in Industry News

A website for discovering and booking buses, ferries and trains in Asia, Pombai, shut down this month, though not for a lack of heart.

Founder and CEO Joseph Finkenbinder tells Tnooz:

We couldn’t get the funding necessary to keep going so I had to shut it down.

It’s not official yet but since the funding wasn’t there it’s in inevitable and I’ve begun the paperwork for closing down the legal structure.

We had started selling tickets and have had customers from China, USA, France, Germany, and more.

Our biggest problem was getting local bus companies to use us as a channel. We were basically force-feeding them customers, but they were slow to understand the value. It’s still a new sector.”

Angel funding of $60,000 had come by way of US investors and from Startup Bootcamp Dublin, the TechStars European affiliate. Tnooz had featured it in the TLabs Showcase, and at one point the company had a team of 10 Chinese, American, Lithuanian, and Nepalese software developers, designers, and business staff building the product.
