Expedia reclaims the top spot! on The 2013 Travel Weekly Power List

Posted by on in Industry News

The seesaw battle to be the largest travel company by sales as ranked by the annual Travel Weekly Power List continues with the swing back to Expedia, which reclaimed the top position from American Express. And continuing to climb was Priceline, powered in part by its rapidly growing Booking.com subsidiary and now occupying the No. 3 spot formerly held by Carlson Wagonlit Travel (No. 4).

Come on travel companies – why are you not investing in tablet applications?

Posted by on in Industry News

Travel companies are forever claiming how app-savvy they are  - and now independent research tells us all that tablets are grabbing a significant share of hotel website traffic.

An eMarketer report referenced Adobe’s Hotel Benchmarking Metrics study which found that tablets have overtaken smartphones for mobile browsing share.

The study analyzed more than 300 million visits to 31 hotel websites worldwide in Q4 2012 (80% of which were for US properties), finding that nearly one-sixth of traffic to those sites came from mobile devices.

How much is on the table with destination services for travel companies? [Hint: it's huge]

Posted by on in Industry News

A study by Euromonitor estimated the total leisure spend on travel and destination-related products was a massive Euro 2.5 trillion during 2012.

Roughly half that of expenditure is on so-called “commodity items”, such as flights, hotel and car rental.

That leaves a mammoth chunk – around Euro 1.25 trillion – accounting for money spent by travellers on in-destination products, such as transfers, things-to-do, attractions, shopping and tours.

Wuhu wants to disrupt the original disruptors and make travel easy

Posted by on in Industry News

Many an online travel ‘what if? was considered before Wuhu was born and like many startups it’s based on the premise that there must be a better way.

What if it were approached from the traveller’s point of view – loves, hates and desire when travelling What if it were destination rather than origin oriented What if I didn’t have to start from scratch every time I logged in What if it could save a trip plan for later completion What if there was a site that had no inventory to push

The startup’s team is currently 16, including  a five-strong board, and key members include boss Terry Gilliam, chief operating officer James Vaile, tech boss Ajith Pillai, marketing boss Jim Russell and general counsel Paul Remus.

Wuhu is funded by 20 shareholders who are, for the most part, travel executives or investment professionals and it’s going after a slice of the Expedia/Travelocity/Priceline pie.

Revenue is initially expected via agency commission followed by membership fees and, Wuhu tells us,  a new version of ‘placement’ advertising.

Sign of the times – Google slowly killing natural search

Posted by on in Industry News

MARKETING: Remember the heady days of SEO, circa 2005-2008, when every travel brand around was busily either hiring the services of digital agencies or going it alone when trying to get on the first page of Google.
