Qantas puts on the afterburners to move back on top – Top Australia travel websites, June 2013

Posted by on in Industry News

Qantas has soared past sister carrier Jetstar to retake pole position in the list of leading travel websites in Australia.

Jetstar managed to dump 4% market share between May and June this year, paving the way for Qantas to move into the number one spot with a near-3% jump in its own web traffic.

Virgin Australia gained almost 1% over the same period but remained in third spot.

10 steps to stand out from the crowd and bring direct traffic home

Posted by on in Industry News

NB: This is a viewpoint from Pedro Colaco, president and CEO of GuestCentric.

Don’t neglect your own website, it is where hoteliers have the greatest control over image, rates, margins and several other essential factors that might also be somewhat controllable on other channels, although never as much as in the hotel’s own channels. Direct website traffic is very important in the hotel industry.

Expedia admits that TripAdvisor and Booking.com are hurting it hard

Posted by on in Industry News

CEO Dara Khosrowshahi was somewhat on the defensive today in answering investor questions on a call for second quarter 2013 for Expedia, the world’s largest online travel agency.

The company saw a broad negative impact as TripAdvisor moved to metasearch, hurting Expedia on all metrics. In response, the company plans to tweak its bidding strategy for gaining position in the top slots of TripAdvisor’s metasearch results.

The most popular mobile OTA and metasearch apps so far in 2013

Posted by on in Industry News

Which travel apps were the most popular in the first half of 2013 for the United States and the United Kingdom?

That question was answered this month in a report by Kevin Kopelman, equity research analyst at investment bank Cowen & Company. He crunched the numbers from benchmarking services AppData and App Annie.

Here are his estimated six-month average rankings, based on reported average monthly rankings between January 1 and June 16:

NusaTrip wants to be the preferred OTA for the Indonesian market

Posted by on in Industry News

The Indonesian online travel market is fragmented, maturing, and quite interesting.

The market works slightly differently compared to elsewhere. For instance, the preferred mode of payment in Indonesia is bank transfer.

Another example: BlackBerry is the leading smartphone in Indonesia, with 15 million users. (That’s a huge slice of the 80 million users worldwide.)

Having noted such quirks, you have to be impressed by the growth of the Indonesian travel industry. A screen grab, below, shows the projected domestic airline traffic growth.

GetGoing adds hotel booking, via Expedia, plus UX tweaks

Posted by on in Industry News

Coming out of beta four months ago, San Francisco start-up GetGoing has elicited buzz because of its unique opaque booking product for vacation packages: “pick two, get one.”

Today the San Francisco company adds traditional hotel booking to its menu of options — with an inventory of 140,000 hotels in 150 countries from Expedia Affiliate Network (EAN). It will mimick Hotels.com’s highly successful book-10-hotels-get-a-tenth-stay-free loyalty rewards concept.

The start-up, which has 35 full-time employees, is a graduate of the Y Combinator accelerator program and has received about $5 million in funding. In April it added ordinary flight booking.

It doesn’t reveal key metrics, but says that out of millions of searches per month, its conversion rate is higher than it projected and than what its airline partners had asked of it as metrics for success. The company cryptically says “hundreds of thousands of travelers” have “chosen” it for “search and booking experiences.”
